Minimal disassembly (if any) and some basic tools may be needed.
Part Description: The defrost heater turns on/off throughout the day to melt the build-up of frost/ice on the evaporator coils.
Failure Symptoms: Ice and/or frost buildup is on the rear panel or floor inside the freezer (depending on the style and placement of the evaporator coil); Loud popping/cracking sound during defrost cycle; Inconsistant defrost cycles; Poor cooling performance in both fridge and freezer sections.
Testing: Unplug the unit and disconnect the defrost heater wires. Use a multimeter to test it for continuity. If the defrost heater does not have continuity, replace it.
Bonus Tip: Use only a hair dryer and hot water to thaw the evaporator coil. Never use anything sharp to chip or pry at the ice or frost.
