Repair Skill Level: 3 | Moderate
Minimal disassembly and some basic tools may be needed.
Failure Symptoms: Dryer won't start; Dryer tripping breaker; Dryer stopped spinning mid-cycle.
Part Description: The motor drives the rotation of the drum.
Testing: The drive motor turns the drum and the blower wheel to exhaust the air. Before replacing the motor, first check the thermal fuse, start switch, and door switch which tend to fail more often than the motor. If nothing else has failed begin checking the motor. Remove the belt from the motor and check the blower wheel for any obstructions. If no obstructions, try rotating the drum by hand. If the drum won't rotate, determine what's causing it to get stuck. If the drum turns freely, the motor might be defective. Additionally, if the dryer trips the breaker the motor may have shorted out. Use a multimeter to test it for continuity. If there's no continuity, replace the motor.
Bonus Tip: Overloading the dryer is a common cause of broken dryer parts. Learn your dryer's max capacity to get the best longevity out of it.
