Minimal disassembly (if any) and some basic tools may be needed.
Part Description: The thermistor monitors the air temperature inside the drum and ensures that clothes get dry while also keeping the dryer from overheating.
Failure Symptoms: Ineffective drying, prolonged or shortened dry times.
How to Test: Thermistors do not have continuity, they show resistance. Therefore, to test it you need a multimeter that measures ohms.
Before beginning, unplug the dryer from the power. Connect the multimeter to the thermistor. At room temperature the multimeter should immediately read a resistance from the thermistor. Next, with the multimeter still connected to the thermistor, use a hair dryer to blow hot air over the thermistor. As the thermistor becomes hotter, its resistance should decrease.
If there is no initial resistance or if the resistance doesn't change when the temperature changes, then thermistor should be replaced.
For further testing, refer to the dryer's manual to locate its wiring diagram or technical guide. This should tell you the specific resistance values for various heat temperatures on your dryer model.
*Resistance is an electrical quantity that measures how the device or material reduces the electric current flow through it. The resistance is measured in units of ohms.
*Continuity and resistance testing should be attempted only when voltage is NOT present in the circuit being tested. Always unplug the device or turn off the main circuit breaker before attempting a continuity test. Ensure that all capacitors are safely discharged.
